What is a kilowatt hour (kWh)?
A kWh stands for kilowatt hour – the unit used to measure energy use. 1 kWh will power a 40 watt light bulb for 25 hours.
Read our helpful guide to learn more about what a kWh is and how it’s calculated.
What is a standing charge?
A standing charge is a fixed daily amount of money that we add to your energy bill.
It’s a daily charge that helps cover the costs of keeping your home connected to the energy network, however much or little energy you use. It also goes towards helping vulnerable people.
Your daily standing charge amount might change depending on your tariff or chosen payment method.

How does a standing charge work?
A standing charge is a bit like line rental for a phone. For a phone, you’ll pay a line rental to maintain the telephone line. On top of this, you’ll be billed for the calls you make. If you don’t make any calls, you’ll still be charged for your line rental.
On your energy bill, we’ll ask you to pay a standing charge. We will also bill you for the energy you use. If you don’t use any energy, we will still ask you to pay the standing charge.

What is a Tariff Information Label?
The Tariff Information Label (TIL) gives you the key facts about a tariff upfront and in one place. It lets you know any special rewards that may apply to the tariff.
What is a Personal Projection?
A Personalised Projection is a personalised quote based on your home and your consumption. It gives you the best estimate on how much you will pay to help you pick the right tariff.
How do I switch to British Gas from my current energy supplier?
Switching is easy, just take a look at our tariffs and tell us the one you want. We’ll take care of the rest by contacting your current supplier and switching you over. The whole process takes two to three weeks at most. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when the switch has happened and when to send us your first meter reading.
How do I switch between tariffs if I’m already a customer?
It’s quick and easy to change tariffs online if you’re already with us. Simply access your account online, go to ‘tariff switch’ and pick your new tariff. It’ll take us 24 hours to switch you over and you won’t have to pay any exit fees.
What happens if I change the way I pay?
If you move from Direct Debit to pay by Cash or Cheque, your unit rate will increase. You can see the difference between Direct Debit and Cash or Cheque rates by updating your personalised quote. We’ll always give you seven days’ notice before we change the way you pay, though.
Do I need to tell my current supplier I'm switching?
No - once you've given us your details and confirmed that you want to switch, we'll handle everything for you.
