Is an MPAN or MPRN the same as a meter serial number?
No. A meter serial number, sometimes called a meter ID or MSN, is unique to the actual meter and is usually found near the barcode on the device. Your MPAN (for electricity) and MPRN (for gas) identify your supply points, not the physical meter. These numbers are used to manage your gas or electricity connection and appear on your bill, but they’re not printed on the meter itself. If you’re unsure, check your bill to confirm the correct details for your account and meter readings.
Will my MPAN and MPRN number change if I switch supplier?
No, your electricity MPAN and gas MPRN numbers stay the same when you change supplier. These numbers are linked to your property’s supply points, not your energy contract. They help all suppliers identify your connection and ensure accurate billing. Even if you move to a new tariff or switch provider, your MPAN and MPRN remain the same because they’re part of the national energy network. MPAN and MPRN numbers are needed when we set up your new business energy contract.
Will my MPAN and MPRN change if I move business location?
Yes, your MPAN and MPRN will change if you move to a new business location. These numbers are linked to the specific electricity and gas supply points at your property, so when you relocate, your new site will have its own MPAN for electricity and MPRN for gas. We need the MPAN, and any MPRN for gas supply, when we set up your business energy account to ensure you receive accurate bills. See Moving business premises.
Will my MPAN number change if I get a smart meter?
No, your electricity MPAN won’t change when you upgrade to an electricity smart meter. Your MPAN is a unique number that identifies your electricity supply point, and it stays the same whatever type of meter you have. Installing a smart meter replaces your existing meter with a more advanced one that sends readings automatically, helping you manage energy more efficiently. Your MPAN remains linked to your property’s supply, so you’ll continue to use the same number for billing and account purposes.
