Leading the charge on electrifying our van fleet by 2025

25th January 2022

Our brand new electric vans

We rely on our fleet of 9,000 vans to reach our customers and keep their homes and businesses running smoothly. But with so many vans on UK roads, we felt like it was important to do everything we could to lower our emissions. That’s why, since 2020, we’ve ordered 3,000 new fully-electric Vauxhall Vivaro-e vans. It’s the largest commercial EV order in the UK and is a big part of our mission to drive down our carbon footprint and do our bit for the environment.

By switching our fleet over to EVs, we can cut our carbon emissions by around 75% – improving air quality and massively reducing our carbon footprint overall as a business. We’ve already clocked up nearly 3 million electric miles so far, and we’re aiming to buy more EVs as soon as they’re available.

Our target to cut annual emission reduction targets for our fleet has helped us cut emissions by over 40% in the last five years. And our goal is to completely electrify the British Gas fleet by 2025 – that’s five years earlier than the UK’s ban on internal combustion engines. So we’ll be placing more orders with our friends at Vauxhall as soon as they’re off the assembly line.

Leading the charge in your community

The past 12 months have been tough for everyone. But they’ve shown that our engineers can play a vital part in the local community they serve. From working with the Trussell Trust to deliver over 4 million meals to people in need, to making sure the first electric vans go to the areas with the highest emission zones. These are just some of the things we’re doing to make things greener, cleaner and safer for everyone.

How you can get involved

To help our customers lower their carbon footprint, all our electricity tariffs are now 100% zero carbon. And if you want to get even get closer to carbon-neutral, here are a couple of ideas that are really worth considering.

Giving electric vehicles the green light

Electric cars have come a long way in recent years. And while they’re relatively expensive, they could end up saving you money in the long run. If you’re thinking about swapping to an electric car, or perhaps you already have, then check out our handy guide on charging your EV.

Charging your electric vehicle could not be easier

Power your home, protect our planet

For a smaller change that could still make a big difference, why not take a look at our Green Future energy tariff? We’ll match 100% of the electricity you use with renewable sources, like wind and solar. And all of the CO2 footprint from your gas will be balanced by carbon-cutting projects and biogas made from food and farm waste. It’s a simple way to get your home one-step closer to being carbon neutral.

From supporting earth-friendly projects in Africa to investing in low-carbon technologies back home, our mission to make our business more sustainable is only just beginning. Find out more here.
