How an air source heat pump works

Air source heat pumps are the amazing low-carbon alternative to gas boilers.

They work a bit like a fridge-freezer, but in reverse. The clever technology uses electricity to take warmth from the air outside – even when temperatures get as low as -15C!

Heat pumps are the greener way to supply your home’s heating and hot water. They give you all the comfort and convenience of a boiler, but with fewer CO2 emissions.

What our customers think of us on Trustpilot

Recently got a heat pump installed by British Gas. They were great at communicating – and I had a chance to inspect and request finishing touches. All in all, 10 out of 10!

Trustpilot 5 stars

The engineer did a complete survey to see if a heat pump would suit our property. And rather than mis-selling, he offered an alternative option better suited to us. Thank you.

Pros and cons of an air source heat pump

Air source heat pumps can be a green and cost-effective way of heating your home – but they’re not right for everybody and every building.

They work best when your home is energy efficient, which means you might need to make some improvements to your insulation.

You might need some changes to your pipework and radiators too. But don’t worry – we’ll tell you what’s needed before starting work and your price will include any extra work

Frequently Asked Questions

What government grants are available for air source heat pumps?

From October 2023, the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives homeowners in England and Wales a £7,500 grant towards the cost of a heat pump.

For homeowners in Scotland, The Home Energy Scotland grant gives £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump – plus a potential £1,500 extra if you live in a rural area.

Applying for the grant couldn’t be simpler. British Gas will do all the paperwork for you and include the grant as a discount on the price you pay.

How long do air source heat pumps last?

You can expect an air source heat pump to last for 20 years or more. Because they’re based on a relatively simple and reliable technology, heat pumps don’t need a lot of maintenance – although an annual service is recommended.

Do air source heat pumps work in very cold weather?

Yes. Air source heat pumps work effectively even when outside temperatures are -15°C, although they are a bit more energy efficient at warmer temperatures.

Are air source heat pumps expensive to run?

The only fuel needed to run ASHP heating is electricity. The amount of electricity required depends on the size of your home and also the quality of your insulation. The better the insulation, the less heat your home will lose – and the less energy will be needed to operate the heat pump. A heat pump in a well-insulated home should be cheaper to run than a traditional gas boiler.

What are the different types of heat pump?

There are two types of heat pump: air source heat pumps (which we install) and ground source heat pumps (which we don’t). As the names suggest, ground source heat pumps get heat from the ground, while air source heat pumps get it from the outside air. Ground source heat pumps are generally trickier to install and require much more outside space, while air source heat pumps are suitable for a larger range of properties. You can get more detail on the differences between the two types of heat pumps in this article by the Energy Saving Trust.

How much space do I need for an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump looks a bit like an external aircon unit. It’s installed outside your property and needs a solid base to sit on. It needs about 3m x 2m for the unit itself, plus enough space around it to achieve good airflow.

What are the disadvantages of air source heat pumps?

If your home is well insulated, an air source heat pump is an energy-efficient, economical, and low-carbon way of heating your home. However, not all homes are suitable for heat pumps. If a lot of heat escapes through your walls, roof, doors and windows, the heat pump will need a lot of electricity to generate enough heat – which could mean you end up spending more on heating than you would with a traditional gas boiler.

Why do I need to change pipework and radiators for an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps keep your home warm by producing steady amounts of lower heat, rather than quick bursts of high heat. Heat pumps generate heat between 35°C and 55°C, whereas for a gas boiler this is between 70°C and 80°C. Your installation team will look at your current central heating system and let you know if you need to make any upgrades to get the best performance from your heat pump. For example, one common change is to install bigger radiators so that there’s more surface area for the lower heat output.

Is ASHP heating noisy?

No, a heat pump only generates around 50 decibels, which is about the same as a gas boiler or a fridge freezer. And because they’re outside, you probably won’t notice anything inside your home. If your heat pump does start making loud noises, it’s probably a sign that something needs fixing!

  1. To be eligible for the grant, a valid, non-expired Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no recommendations for cavity wall or loft insulation is required. In March 2022, the government announced a removal of VAT on domestic energy-saving measures, including heat pumps. This will last for five years from 1st April 2022. In September 2023, the government increased the grant available to homeowners in England and Wales installing an air source heat pump from 31/10/2023 to £7,500.
